IT TAKES TWO TO LET-GO

In Fashion we live in a world of constant progress and change. Stand still for a second and you’ll be left behind... but as hard as we try to move forward, as tempting as it is to never look back. The past always comes back to bite us on our size 0 bottoms.

Fashion is constantly reinventing itself.. that means we have to keep reinventing our selves too. Without adapting to change you can find yourself moving backwards instead of forwards...

So, I was thinking... that if you try and forget the past you are doomed to repeat it... Sometimes the past is something you can’t let go of.  We will never understand why...people in your past can be as addictive as a drug, as deadly as poison...but bringing people back from the dead will only haunt your present....

So we create new versions of ourselves. New looks, new hair, new clothes and a new us, but in going 'undercover'  we just need to be sure that the new us is an improvement over the last... and if so, the last us is to be put in the past for good.

The world can change in an instant... there is no time for looking back anymore.

And just like a 'tango'... it takes two to 'let-go'.

'I DIE FOR YOUR BALAYAGE FREDI'

We all love it when designers take a turn in the opposite direction and suprise us with a collection that is out of designer charecter, but for KJ... she knows her style inside out and she is sticking to it... I would not ask for it any other way.

KJ has never been one to mess around, when she says 'jungle' she's talking tribal, ethnic accessories, wrapped and plaited headpieces, unfinished and aged-leather cropped jackets and wraps, a consistent Aztec print with the designer’s signature draped aesthetic. 

The collection was loose, organic and unpretentious – with a mix of basic block colours and all stripey tanks, long sleeveless capes and oversized tassle neckpieces.

KIRRILY JOHNSTON has created a world where the earth has fought back against modernity, where there is finally balance between nature and technology.

JUST LIKE DESSERT

For young designers, living up to the highest of expectations can be a total nightmare. For a designer genius like Dion Lee, anything is possible...

The architectural tailoring was softened this year with curved edges and paintery-styled butterfly prints.

After surving 3 days of the Fashion Week - no food, all drink diet, by the morning of day 4 I was about ready to eat anything in sight. When the gelato-coloured dresses with fine pleating and draped over cut-outs came out my mouth began to water profusely.

His colour palette of lilac (a favourite this week) and pale blue felt fresh and summery – his pieces have become slightly more commercial and wearable without losing their conceptual status.

DL has a level of sophistication that is truly rare to find in the Australian Industry. Once again, he has put every other designer this week to rest.

GRAY IS THE NEW BLACK

FREDRICH GRAY

Fredrich Gray presented a collection of minimalist lines and shapes using technologically advanced fabrics and precision tailoring to create an interface between one medium and another.

The aggressive sculpture with splintered edges that was created for the runway, was indeed fitting of what was to show for SS2010. 

The collection was based around a black and white palette, with sharp paneling and mesh inserts resembling lightning bolts which depicted light being deflected in its passing.

The garments reflected an aggressive energy with an electrifying intensity. Drawing inspiration from heavy metal music, sculpture and art installations, designer BEN POLLITT has created a refreshingly original unique 'black' aesthetic.

Body con minis were skin tight which contrasted with sheer muscle tanks and cape like jackets. Scarfs were completely oversized and wrapped around the shoulders like a SARI. Leather was featured in a consistent manner, as were wools, sheer cottons and silk organzas.

Loose tailored 'man style' shorts, oversized loose knits and soft organza paneled dresses gave the collection the perfect delicate contrast.

Pollitt's cuts are his own, they are timeless yet completely original. His clothing is functional yet it still pushes boundaries of the human form. He has a distinctive creative vision that is shown through his exaggerated moodiness and experimental use of fabrics.

A minimalist vision has emerged from FREDRICH GRAY.

ANYTHING BUT MINIMAL

Australian designer, CHRISTOPHER ESBER has come a long way since 2008 when he famously paraded models down the runway with green apples in their mouths.

After canceling his show at last minute for personal reasons in 2009, ESBER- the constructed genius...hit RAFW last night with a BANG!

And so it begins.... a new star has been born....

ESBER’s SS2010/11 collection was inspired by ‘minimal nothingness’, elements were taken from scaffolding, demolition, construction sites, and 90-degree angles.

Speaking of construction, I had the privilege to work with ESBER last year and was blown away by the way he deconstructs, constructs, re-constructs and re-develops... His conceptual progress is as long as a piece of string and his ideas that are based around a rock solid concept are somewhat completely TWISTED and very unexpected....

The gals paced down the single sided runway dressed in crisp white collared shirts- some with contrasting black buttons and extended cuffs that reached the elbow, structured leather vest with sheer underlay and a hint of crystal embelished organza basics... 

In keeping to a'minimalist aesthetic', Esber's tailored Jackets features tucks and folds that were highlighted by bold cut outs.

The collection was somewhat futuristic looking, in hues of black, white, navy and a touch of hospital blue. 

Hair and makeup was just like the collection, simple, minimal and chic. It was slicked into ponytails that looked as though they were about to fall out. Makeup was fresh and subtle, nude lips and nude eyes... nothing more was needed. The clothes spoke for themselves.

As each model walked toward back stage, they each lined up against the white wall that was directly facing the viewers. Legs apart, palms outwards, in an almost confronting reality.

As the show came to a close the music grew louder and the models each steped in a domino effect towards us, in what seemed to be a message of personal interpretation but as I see it ESBER could very well be our new KING and is definately here to stay.
